Warwickshire has just been added to the Joiner Marriage Index with 23,472 marriage records in 161 parishes between 1521 and 1837.

West Riding of Yorkshire Update – 2 new parishes – 28th December 2011

Somewhat belatedly here are the details of the updates to the West Riding of Yorkshire in the Joiner Marriage Index. I can only apologise for not writing this brief article earlier but work has been a touch busy of late. The update was fully implemented on the 28th December and I hope that it has already proved useful for some of our customers. Thank you for your patience.

We added 11,749 marriage records to the Joiner Marriage Index for the West Riding of Yorkshire, which was a mixture of updates to five of the parishes and the addition of two new parishes, namely East Ardsley and Woodkirk. The details of the updates are:

New parishes:

East Ardsley with 126 marriage records between 1813 and 1837
Woodkirk with 260 marriage records between 1813 and 1837

Existing parishes:

Almondbury with 4806 marriage records between 1813 and 1837
Kirkburton with 2515 marriage records between 1813 and 1837
Rothwell with 3077 marriage records between 1813 and 1837
Sandal Magna with 310 marriage records between 1832 and 1837
Tickhill with 655 marriage records between 1772 and 1837

This takes the total to 253,903 marriage records in 146 parishes in the West Riding of Yorkshire and 2,227,589 marriage records in 3,186 parishes in 26 counties for the whole of the online part of the Joiner Marriage Index. Also belatedly we would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2012, and hope that we continue to be the leading online marriage index in our 6th year for the website!

West Riding of Yorkshire Update – 8 New Parishes – 29th October 2011

We have just added 7,164 marriage records to the Joiner Marriage Index for the West Riding of Yorkshire including marriage records in 8 new parishes for the period 1813 – 1837 and updates to 7 other parishes. The new parishes are:

Badsworth with 121 marriage records.
Featherstone with 186 marriage records.
South Kirkby with 219 marriage records.
Cawthorne with 242 marriage records.
Silkstone with 1928 marriage records.
Penistone with 973 marriage records.
Normanton with 96 marriage records.
Warmfield with 129 marriage records.

This takes the total to 242,154 marriage records in 144 parishes in the West Riding of Yorkshire and 2,215,840 marriage records in 3,184 parishes in 26 counties in the online part of the Joiner Marriage Index.

Since I have just retired Toby thought it might be a good thing if I started to share some of my thoughts with you on this blog. The idea is that I should contribute something of note to genealogists on a semi-regular basis. I hope it may prove slightly interesting to you. Any feedback, or debate, would be greatly appreciated.

I started the database way back in the mid 1970s when I was starting out on my genealogical journey and got a bit stuck with my family while living some 200 miles from their main area of the Hertfordshire-Buckinghamshire borders. I helped to start the Cleveland Family History Society and thought that I might create something of an index similar to Boyd for the southern part of County Durham which seemed particularly poorly served by him.

I had access to the original parish registers during my lunch hour every week in Durham CRO whilst travelling around the north east in my line of business. The easiest start seemed to be to fill the gaps between the end of most of Boyd’s coverage in 1812 and the start of General Registration in 1837. I was transcribing the registers into reporters’ notebooks and then transferring and indexing the entries onto scrap computer punch cards. The first manifestation of the Joiner Marriage Index was as three handwritten indexes for County Durham 1813-1837. I believe those indexes are still available at both Durham County Record Office and Cleveland Archives.

At about the same time Bill Rounce and Geoff Nicholson were also starting similar projects on their own separate initiatives. We informally agreed to split up County Durham into our own areas of interest to avoid duplication of effort. Geoff took the far north west around Muggleswick and Bill took the north east of the county. I worked away on the south since I live down that way. I was also involved in typing up a copy of the registers in the Middleton in Teesdale area for Major Kenyon Fuller and the Society of Genealogists (SoG). As my index developed, and computers came into more general use, it migrated onto electronic media and I amalgamated Bill and Geoff’s work into an overall index for County Durham.

Having received a good response from record offices I started to extend the index back to 1800, then 1754 and finally any dates I could get hold of – I am an inveterate counter and collector! Once Durham was nearing completion (!) I decided to start with the old North Riding of Yorkshire, given the proximity of NYCRO at Northallerton. From there the database took on a life of its own. The availability of printed parish registers in electronic format was a great assistance in the growth of the number of parishes. Using these sources Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire appeared relatively quickly.

West Riding of Yorkshire Update – 11 New Parishes – 3rd September 2011

We have just added the marriage records from 11 new parishes to the Joiner Marriage Index for the West Riding of Yorkshire for the period 1813 to 1837. Some corrections and additions have also been applied to the marriage records for 14 of the other parishes to also fill out the period 1813 to 1837. There will be more parishes to follow but for now the parishes to which we have added marriage records are:

Bardsey with 46 marriage records.
Brotherton with 339 marriage records.

Ferry Fryston with 103 marriage records.
Kellington with 256 marriage records.

This takes the total to 234,990 marriage records in 136 parishes in the West Riding of Yorkshire and 2,208,676 marriage records in 3,176 parishes in 26 counties in the online part of the Joiner Marriage Index.

Norfolk Update – 48 New Parishes – 12th July 2011

We have just added 5,256 new marriage records to the Joiner Marriage Index for Norfolk which includes 48 new parishes and some updated data for 15 of our other parishes. The new parishes just added are:

The Joiner Marriage Index now truly is the best and only searchable index for marriage records in Norfolk, no other online resource comes close to offering the data that we do.

This addition takes the total for Norfolk to 117,886 marriage records in 578 parishes between 1538 and 1837 and the total for the Joiner Marriage Index to 2,201,203 marriage records in 3,165 parishes in 26 counties.

West Riding of Yorkshire Update – Leeds – 14th June 2011

The parish of Leeds in the West Riding of Yorkshire has had a major update with over 12,000 additional marriage records added between 1572 and 1722.

This takes the total for the West Riding of Yorkshire to 227,517 marriage records in 125 parishes between 1538 and 1837, and for the Joiner Marriage Index as a whole to 2,188,589 marriage records in 3,042 parishes.

Surnames of Brides and Grooms from our Marriage Records

For those of you who may have been using the Joiner Marriage Index for a while, you may remember that within each county we used to list the male and female surnames for our marriage records. During the major redesign of the site which began last year these pages were removed as part of the simplification to the navigation around the site. Having almost completed the redesign now it seemed an appropriate time to reintroduce the pages as an extra resource to help track down marriage records where the surname may be a little ambiguous for one of the multitude of possible reasons.

To find the lists is straightforward as they are linked from each county page in the coverage section of the Joiner Marriage Index. For example, the pages appropriate to Buckinghamshire are: Brides and Grooms.

At the time of the writing of this post, 3rd June 2011, the work is about half done to implement these pages into the counties of the Joiner Marriage Index. The counties should be complete within the next couple of days giving complete lists of the surnames contained in our marriage records.

West Riding of Yorkshire Update – 22nd May 2011

We have just added another three parishes to our marriage records for the West Riding of Yorkshire. This takes the total for the county to 205,176 marriage records in 125 parishes.

The new parishes are:

Elland with 5470 marriage records between 1559 and 1714
Guiseley with 1352 marriage records between 1586 and 1721
Saddleworth with 1166 marriage records between 1613 and 1751

This takes the total for the Joiner Marriage Index to 2,166,248 marriage records in 3,042 parishes.
