NEWSELLS: To many of our readers it will be of interest as an instance of lengevity in this district to learn that the old toll-collector, JOINER - a familiar figure to Roystonians and frequenters of Royston Market - attained his 90th year on December 5th (yesterday) and that his wife is 88 next Wednesday. They have been married 65 years - he being 25 and she 23 years of age when they married. They are both at the present time hale and hearty. They have brought up eleven children, two grandchildren and three nieces. One day last year they entertained three old friends, one from Manchester, one from Birmingham and the other from Cambridge. Aged 83, 86 and 88 respectively. (2)

NEWSELLS: In our obituary column this week will be found the announcement of the death of one of the oldest inhabitants in the district in Mr James JOINER, who died on Tuesday morning last at the great age of 91 years. Few men in the district had been better or longer known, especially to persons attending the Royston market, the toll collecting of which had been in his hands for about sixty years - nearly forty years under the late Mr. Johnson of Barley, and for upwards of twenty years under Messrs. Nash and Son, of Royston. Deceased had a clear recollection of many things in the district during his long life, and retained his faculties to the last, and until the last two years had regularly done his work of collecting the tolls in the market. Deceased was much respected and many persons had taken a kindly interest in his welfare and comfort during the later years of his life, and none more so than Mrs. Seymour, a daughter of Mr Johnson for whom deceased had so long acted in collecting the Market tolls. Deceased leaves a widow in her 90th year and six of a family of eleven, his married life being unbroken for 67 years. JOINER -On the 7th inst. at Newsells, James JOINER, aged 91 years.(2)
