NEWSELLS - Inquest: On Friday last an inquest was held by D. B. BALDING Esq., coroner, at the house of Mr. G. B. Burr on the body of Joseph JOINER, aged 74, a labourer in the employ of Lord STRATHNAIRN, who had been found dead in an underground water tank on the previous Wednesday evening. It appeared from the evidence that deceased was last seen alive on the Tuesday evening about half-past eight, when Mrs. Joseph HAGGAR spoke to and left him against Mr. SWORDER's gate. He was not after seen alive, and did not return to his home that evening. On being searched for on the following morning he was, after some little time, found standing upright in an underground water tank in Lord STRATHNAIRN's farmyard, his head being nearly, but not quite, covered by the water; in this position, he having been discovered by a boy named William PARKER about nine o'clock on Wednesday morning. There was no evidence to prove by what means deceased got into the tank, nor had any peculiarity of mental condition been recently, or had at any time, noticed by any of the witnesses who knew him.
Mr. DAVEY, surgeon, of Barkway, deposed to having been called to examine the body, on which he found no material marks of violence. He considered the body presented the usual appearance of a drowned person, and had no doubt that death had been caused by drowning. Under the circumstances the coroner recommended the Jury to return an open verdict, which they acordingly did to the effect that the deceased had been "found drowned" in a tank as described.(2)
